“Freedom is what we have—Christ has set us free! Stand, then, as free people, and do not allow yourselves to become slaves again… As for you, my friends, you were called to be free. But do not let this freedom become an excuse for letting your physical desires control you. Instead, let love make you serve one another.” – Galatians 5:1, 13

Independence Day…we celebrate freedom! “Free”…freedom”…what a great word…and we are so blessed to live in a country in which we are basically free…we are free to move when we want, free to travel, free to worship, free to speak, and free to assemble. That is one kind of freedom, for which I am truly grateful.

But there is a deeper freedom that is found in Jesus Christ. In John 8, Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Jesus sets us free from trying to be good enough to gain God’s favor so that He will save us… for we can never be good enough. That’s why Jesus gave His life for us, so that by His grace, through faith in Him, we would experience eternal life when we put our trust in Him. Through faith, Jesus sets us free from sin that enslaves us. Jesus sets us free from trying to earn our salvation. Jesus sets us free from fears, worries and negative attitudes that wall us in. Jesus has sent His Spirit to live in us so that we can live in true freedom.

We have been set free to live a new way, God’s way! We have been set free, not to do whatever we want, but to serve God and others in love. We have been set free to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. We have been set free to become God’s mouth, hands and feet in the world. We are free to love God and others, free to take risks, free to give ourselves away.

Let’s use our freedom wisely…Happy Independence Day!

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Debbie
