Hope and God’s Promises

“So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.” – Hebrews 6:18-19 NLT

Life Guide Bible study author, Jack Kuhatschek tells the story of seeing a tiny makeshift boat while on vacation in Florida. The boat was made from old oil drums, lashed together by ropes, with a few planks of old wood hammered together for a deck. A hand sewn old piece of cloth served as the sail. A plaque attached to the boat told the story of some Cuban refugees who had tried to reach the United States…but didn’t make it. Why would a family set sail in such a rickety raft? Probably because they hoped that the US would provide a better home. This voyage that ended in tragedy, began with hopeful expectation, the promise of a better life. But the voyage was not founded on a solid foundation or promise, and so hope was lost in the midst of a stormy sea.

The suicide rate in the US has increase 24% since 1999. Even though we are better educated, have more entertainment at our finger tips, more technology to keep us connected, it seems people are dying from lack of hope. Hope can be hard to come by these days. Maybe your hope has been shaken recently by difficult circumstances, day to day troubles that come like the winds and waves of a storm.

God offers us a different kind of Hope, an Unshakeable hope, when we build our lives on the promises of God. The writer of Hebrews describes this kind of hope as a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.

Max Lucado says, “Because life is filled with problems, God’s Word is filled with promises.” What if we filtered our lives and our challenges through the promises of God? In our next worship series entitled Unshakeable Hope, Building our Lives on the Promises of God, we will discover how God’s promises can equip us to overcome the difficulties, and troubling circumstances in life, and equip us to make wise decisions when we find ourselves in the midst of winds and waves of life that rage around us. This series is based on the book Unshakeable Hope by Max Lucado.

I hope you will join us in worship on Sunday Mornings beginning October 13, as we take a new look at building our lives on the promises of God. Worship is at 10:00 A.M.  And share the gift of Hope by inviting a friend!

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Debbie
